Throughout its history Loughborough University has built upon its distinctive characteristics and enhanced its strengths. Its origins in 1909, as one of the UK’s foremost technical institutes focused on meeting society’s needs, set in train more than a century ago an ethos that is still evident at Loughborough today.
In the 21st Century Loughborough is one of Britain’s leading universities, with an international reputation for research that matters, excellence in teaching and strong links with industry. It has been awarded seven prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education.
The University has wide-ranging, well-established academic strengths, and Loughborough is particularly renowned for engineering, having the largest concentration of students of any UK university.
Loughborough is also the country’s premier university for sport, with an outstanding record of achievement in performance at every level and in sport’s underpinning academic disciplines of exercise and health sciences. Its students and alumni are renowned for their unrivalled sporting success – Loughborough has won the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Championship for last 34 years.
Its leading position was confirmed when it was chosen as the site of the preparation camp and kitting out centre for Team GB before the London 2012 Olympic Games. Loughborough was also named ‘University of the Year for Sport’ by The Times Good University Guide 2014.
The University has developed a reputation for the relevance of its work, producing research that matters, driven by society’s need to address real-life challenges. It has both long-standing and new partnerships with business and industry – commercial potential is at the centre of much of what it does.
The quality of education and the wider experience the University provides for its students enables them to develop the knowledge, skills and qualities required by employers. The University’s highly valuable links with Loughborough Students’ Union have also been instrumental in the development of an award-winning student experience and our outstanding record for student satisfaction.
In 2015 the University will open an additional academic campus in London’s new innovation quarter. Loughborough University in London, based on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, will offer postgraduate and executive-level education, as well as research and enterprise opportunities.
